Panthers sold, will operate under banner with KW Titans

KITCHENER - The Kitchener Panthers have new owners!

The team will operate under the newly formed Waterloo Region Sports and Entertainment (WRSE) banner with the KW Titans basketball team.

The WRSE is a partnership between David and Kate Schooley of the KW Titans, and Sam, Naseem and Shanif Hirani, a local family who work together closely in business and in baseball.

The acquisition marks a new chapter in the 105-year history of the team. It also marks an exciting new chapter for local entertainment, as a single entity now operates two premier sports teams in Kitchener-Waterloo.

David Schooley, the CEO of KW Titans Basketball Corp, said this partnership will being about some great opportunities.

"Owning two local sports teams allows the group to unite the Kitchener-Waterloo community in a unique way," Schooley said. "The Titans and Panthers share the same core values of promoting athletic performance, supporting player development, and fostering connections across our community. We are thrilled to join together and expand the dynamic culture of sports in our region."

The ownership group is committed to preserving the legacy of the Kitchener Panthers and modernizing operations to deliver an enhanced experience for fans, players and sponsors. The Panthers hold a special place in the hearts of local fans, and the acquisition will ensure that the future of the team remains bright.

Shanif Hirani has been named the new general manager of the team. He is a former Panthers outfielder who graduated from Columbia University with a Masters degree in sports management.

His baseball expertise and deep ties to the region will drive the team's long-term success on and off the field.

"There's tons of talent all around here as well," he said. "I think we can tap into other parts of Canada that have not been looked at before. We are looking at any avenue we can to improve the team and put a good product out for the City of Kitchener."

Mike Boehmer is staying on with the team as assistant general manager.

"We were very pleased with the presentation that the new ownership group made, which demonstrated a clear vision to enhance all aspects of the Kitchener Panthers," said IBL commissioner Ted Kalnins.

"The KW Titans are known for having one of the most entertaining game-day operations in the Basketball Super League, and the new Panthers ownership intend to bring that same atmosphere and energy to Jack Couch Park, where several exciting upgrades are being planned."

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements regarding initiatives, sponsorship opportunities, and plans for both the KW Titans and Kitchener Panthers.

The Panthers open the regular season on the road, and host the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers on Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. for the 2025 home opener at Jack Couch Park.
